about jim sweeney

meet jim

Jim Sweeney is a ceramic artist based in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. He creates handbuilt sculptural works and vessels defined by flowing forms, carved surfaces, and the dynamic interplay between precision and organic movement. His practice draws heavily from the ocean and surfing, translating a sense of rhythm, erosion, and stillness into form.

With a background in engineering and digital design, Sweeney approaches clay with both structure and openness. Through carving and sgraffito, he brings a sense of control and intentional detail, while raku and saggar firing introduce unpredictability through the interaction of heat, atmosphere, and material. This balance between control and release is central to his work.

Influenced by his experiences with PTSD, his practice is rooted in slowing down and finding moments of clarity. His work has been featured in group shows at Nidum Gallery, Drummond Studio Gallery, Redux Contemporary Art Center, and The Gibbes Museum of Art.
